It’s Breeders Cup Saturday with nine outstanding, top-level races to decide championships across the sport. As was the case yesterday, we’ll have individual previews of all nine races plus separate posts looking at the two pick-4s.
Audio – We previewed the Saturday races with Steve Falk. Here is the early Saturday preview.
Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies
Moonshine Memories and Alluring Star come out of the Chandelier, where the latter set the pace and the former tracked and outfinished. Moonshine Memories also won the Del Mar Debutante where she set a solid pace and wired the field on just 13 days rest. Still, the pace in this race figures to be solid once again and there will be some solid runners coming late.
Piedi Bianchi will be coming from off the pace, and while she couldn’t get Moonshine Memories in either the Del Mar Debutante or the Chandelier, perhaps she’ll get a better chance here if someone else keeps them honest up front.
Separationofpowers is the best hope from New York. She was cooked in a speed duel in the Spinaway but rebounded nicely, showing a nice rating gear, to win the Frizette last time. She does have speed to go, and will probably be sitting close, but drew very poorly in post 13. In watching the Frizette, she was asked around the turn by Jose Ortiz before leveling off late and two deep closers – Caledonia Road and Maya Malibu – rounded out the trifecta behind her in that race.
The best Midwest hope is Heavenly Love, the impressive Alcibiades winner. She tracked the pace, which wasn’t blazing, but then made a very quick move on the far turn and basically ended the race by the top of the stretch. The race was the slowest of the three prep races, but not by that much. Plus, her tactical speed lets Julien Leparoux place her where she wants (she made up seven lengths coming from 10th to win a turf sprint two starts back). In that race, she defeated Princess Warrior, who closed well to be second on just three weeks rest following an impressive maiden win.
Moonshine Memories will be tough to beat, but Heavenly Love might be good enough to come in and pull the upset.
#1 Heavenly Love (9/2)
#7 Moonshine Memories (7/2)
#8 Piedi Bianchi (15/1)
#3 Princess Warrior (12/1)
